CaraVita’s Dementia Life program is an approach to Alzheimer’s and dementia care that is focused on honoring the uniqueness of each individual we serve. Though dementia may steal a person’s memories, those living with dementia can still experience moments of connection and joy. At the end of the day, our lives are not measured by the number of things we have accomplished, but the relationships that we have formed along the way. In Dementia Life, we seek to create environments where those living with dementia can continue to connect to those around them and feel a sense of accomplishment each day. Whether it is making sure someone gets a hug before they get out of bed, or finding the right jazz song to dance to in the afternoon, we want each day in the lives of those we serve to be meaningful and full of engagement.
This person-centered care approach focuses on four significant cornerstones:
Learning the Life Story
To properly design a care plan for an individual living with dementia, we first begin by learning their life story and what makes them tick. Once we know their likes and dislikes, life events, and favorite pastimes – we focus on bringing those joyful memories into life each day. It may be something as simple as working in the garden or relaxing with a pet! As the CaraVita caregivers learn what it means to be a best friend to their clients, they are simultaneously seeking to share in experiences that can bring a smile to your loved one’s face each and every day!
Predictable Daily Rhythm
Life is made up of threads of activities, conversations, and events that move us through our days. At CaraVita, our caregivers seek to be your loved one’s best friend. We train our staff to guide those living with dementia through the day with just the right amount of communication and the best approach to care. By doing this, we create a schedule that is predictable and easy to follow. This schedule incorporates the rituals of those we serve by building the day around what is comfortable for the person living with dementia, rather than what is most convenient for everyone else.
Joy in the Moment
Best friends know what to say to get you to laugh and what they should do to comfort you if you are in destress. As we learn your loved one’s personality and quirks, our caregivers seek to work in moments of joy and spontaneity into the predictable schedule of the day. This could mean taking a drive to visit a favorite restaurant, painting a picture to give to your family, or dancing to some of their favorite records from past decades.
All of our staff go through experiential training that allows them to experience what it would feel like to have dementia. Sometimes the best way to provide quality care is putting yourself in the shoes of a person living with dementia and seeing what kind of approach and assistance you would want to help make your daily life more comfortable. Only by meeting our loved ones with dementia where they are and trying to understand their world, will we be able to provide the empathy and care needed each and every day.
At CaraVita Home Care, we believe we can all benefit with a little help from our friends, and by training our caregivers to become your loved one’s best friend, we can enhance the quality of life to those we care for.
