Congratulations, Balkiss Bochere, our December Caregiver of the Month! We are excited at the opportunity this month to spend some time with Balkiss to learn what makes her such an incredible caregiver!
Balkiss has been a CaraVita employee since February 2016. She told us that she loves her family very dearly, and leaving them behind is extremely difficult, however, she decided to come to the United States to pursue a career and education to provide better lives for them in Kenya. Balkiss and her family (including her husband and seven-year-old son) were all born in Kenya.
Since joining CaraVita, Balkiss says that she’s been happy to work with clients that she can gain practical knowledge and experience from. While some days as a caregiver can be tough, Balkiss says that her clients have shown her how to be strong and have taught her how to work through difficult moments in her life.
“You have to have empathy and patience to be a caregiver. If your heart isn’t in it, you’re not going to make it.” Balkiss went on to say, “I’ve had many families that have said they wish they could have more people like me to care for their loved one, and I tell them that it’s not me, it’s the God in me. I believe that God wants me to treat everyone the way I would want to be treated. When it comes to my clients, I think we all just want to be treated with love and respect.”
Balkiss states that her career at CaraVita has also played a role in her joining the National Guard as a supply logistics specialist. Mentioning one of her closest clients, Balkiss stated "That man was a role model to me. He taught me a lot about life - what to expect and how to set goals. He used to be in the military himself, and that's when I made the decision to enlist. I wanted to serve my country, and it offered me the opportunity to go to school." According to Balkiss, experiences like these are what helped to shape the person she is today.
Throughout her life, Balkiss has been an exemplary example of an excellent caregiver, and we want to thank her for her dedication to CaraVita and her service to our beautiful country. Join us in congratulating her, as she has earned the December Caregiver of the Month award!
